If you weren’t raised vegan, you probably consumed a fair amount of dairy milk through out your life. Did you know that dairy is actually causing osteoporosis and not protect us from it? Yep, it’s the acidity in milk, cheese and yogurt made from animal products that will leach the calcium off your bones. More on that topic, here.
For some people, giving up cheese and yogurt is the biggest issue, while for others, it’s milk. I’m thinking of my brother who just LOVES to drink milk (straight out of the carton). Or one of my good friends, who used to consume generous amounts of chocolate milk after workouts (perhaps this highlights a few other dietary question marks?). But they are not alone. We drink milk, because we learn that it’s good for us and we kind of get addicted to it. The truth is, the only animal milk that we should ever consume, is our mom’s milk. It’s the perfect food for us when we are babies and it strengthens our immune system while also protecting us from allergies and creating a healthy gut environment. Dairy creates many health problems and we really don’t need to consumer any to be healthy.
Now the question is, what to do about the milk drinkers out there, who feel that they NEED that milk in their cereal bowl or just want a little bit of creamer in their coffee. Well, the good news is, there are PLANTY of options out there (see what I did there? ;). Between soy and hemp milk and various different nut milk options (almond, cashew, hazelnut, pecan, macadamia etc) the choices are vast.
When I chose a nut milk, I care about two things: flavor and ingredients. Flavor, because I want my milk to taste yummy but relatively neutral, without any ‘green’ aftertaste. And ingredients because a lot of processed vegan milk options contain a series of additives, such as carrageenan. This ingredients functions as an emulsifier, which can trigger an immune response in your digestive system. The consequence can be inflammation or even intestinal bleeding. Even though science isn’t 100% clear about this topic, I try to stay away from ingredients I can’t pronounce. I prefer going with minimally processed products, that contain a short list of ingredients.
Malk is my latest discovery and I love the Texan brand (yep, vegan product from Texas!!!). All their milks are organic, cold pressed (which extends their shelf life) and don’t contain binders nor fillers. August Vega, the founder of the company, decided to launch Malk because both she and her son were diagnosed with a dairy allergy (which is super common as we shouldn’t consumer dairy). August was looking for a high quality plant based alternative and as no brand out there was fulfilling her requirements, she just started her own company. Malk is definitely super high quality and short of making your own nut milk, it’s a wonderful option. The company also makes chocolate and vanilla flavored options that are free of processed sugar and instead sweetened with maple syrup. Thumbs up for this great company! 🙂
